Bohemian glass or Bohemia crystal (glass and crystal have the same meaning in the Czech language in the context of grind-decorated glass) is a decorative glass made in Bohemia and Silesia since the 13th century. Bohemia was a part of the former Czechoslovakia, now known as the Czech Republic, and was famous for its beautiful and colourful glass. The history of Bohemian glass started with the abundant natural resources found in the countryside. Bohemian glassworkers discovered potash combined with chalk created a clear colourless glass that was more stable than glass from Italy. Bohemian crystal became famous all over the world for its excellent cut, oneness, high quality and engraving. For centuries, Bohemian crystal glass has been a synonym of beauty and perfect workmanship quality. As far back as the beginning of the 18th century, crystal chandeliers and glass products of Bohemia became a popular and European rulers of major importance decorated their palaces with Bohemian glass.
